Stars are gigantic nuclear reactors. They create many of the elements that eventually become planets and everything living on them.

When enough mass becomes concentrated in one region, gravity can become so intense that even light cannot escape beyond the event horizon.
Think bigger.
Earth orbits one star. That star belongs to the Milky Way, a galaxy containing hundreds of billions of stars. The Milky Way itself is only one galaxy among countless others in the observable universe.
